Art Heart Campaign
2013I am so honored to have been asked to design another Art Heart for the AHA this year. I can't wait to get started!
After talking with the patron who purchased the heart that I am designing, and a few days of negotiating different ideas, I've decided to go with a Roses and Butterflies theme in a black, white, and red color palette.
I'm hoping for an elegant, feminine, silk scarf print effect.
I'm drawing a ring of roses or a "circle of red" which will be surrounded on all sides with black and white butterflies. The "circle of red" refers to the group of sponsors for this event.
I drew on a few butterflies and painted them in shades of grey. I'm not sure about the butterfly in the corner. It's the only one facing downward, I might change that.
I thought alot about how to address all the negative space without killing the simple color scheme of black, white, and red. I decided to divide the heart in half and have one half white and the other black, one "circle of red" in roses and the other in butterflies.
Katie and Penny are keeping me company while I work.
I spent the weekend painting, and I think I'm pretty much finished. I just need to add the antenae and spray on a clear coat of acrylic sealer.
I really like the finished piece. It's what I had envisioned; elegant, feminine, and clean. I hope the "Cirlce of Red" member who bought it likes it, too.
She loved it! The gala was held at MSquared Gallery in Houston. It's always such a thrill to be part of this evening. Once again, I had a great time and felt really special to be part of this campaign that protects and preserves the lives of so many American women every year.
American Heart Association Go Red For Women
Art Heart Campaign
2012
This is the Art Heart that I created for the American Heart Association. I really enjoyed making the components for this piece. I incorporated my ceramic tile technique by adding swallows to the back. They are holding a painted banner with the French inscription "In loving memory of my Father."
I also made 5 ceramic roses and attached them to the front of the heart. I love the way the blue violet background sets of the red of the roses.
I used an aluminum embossing technique to make the wings. They are filled with plaster to help hold their shape.

And now we wait for the heart to be collected by the AHA and join the others on their tour.
FINALLY!!! The Red WIne, Dark Chocolate event! Oh, how I've been waiting for this! Mmmm...red wine and dark chocolate are two of my favorite things! Along with being recognized for my awesomeness...which is great.

This is the poster from the event. They spelled my name right!
Yours truly with the chairwoman of the Go Red for Women campaign, and the owner of my heart. She was so sweet to talk with. i just love it when my art goes to awesome people.
I am such a huge fan of the American Heart Association. I think it takes an insightful group of people to recognize the power of intentional imagery and choose to use local artists' own creative expressions to speak for their cause. Anyone can print a poster or hand out flyers, but sponsoring a tour of sculptures to raise awareness of an issue as serious to all of us as hear disease is a bold move. I love it!
